October 2, 3 & 4, 2008 ___________________________________________________________ 2008 Harvest of Quilts Friday: 10AM to 6PM Featured Artist: Linda Riesterer ___________________________________________________________ Featured Employee of the Month
Her favorite sewing tool is: Magnetic Pin picker-upper – we found this at quilt market and I love it. The older I get, the harder it is to get down on my hands and knees. Now I don’t have to. Just pull out the telescoping wand and it picks up pins for me! Her favorite Pattern: O’Christmas Tree -- another find at quilt market. An easy piecing project and because we celebrate both Hanukah and Christmas, I’m bordering mine with a scrappy assortment of Hanukah fabrics and using Stars of David for the cornerstones. Her favorite Book: Embroidery Stitch Bible -- I love the entire bible series (Block Bible, Quilting Bible, Color Bible.) As someone who doesn’t do much embroidery, this book is my favorite. Small enough to carry with me and great step by step pictures for doing almost any stitch. Her fabric selections: Royal Holiday by Moda -- a wonderful line in blues, greens and creams. The snow flake theme is perfect for Lake Wenatchee, where we get so much of that white stuff. The panel squares turn into almost instant pillows for the holidays. I made the border print into a quick table runner, and used the leftovers to make a candle mat. Like many others, I took home ec and sewed my own clothes throughout high school, then put it aside. My mother continued to sew and was the first person I knew to have her own sewing room (my old bedroom). When she died in 1995, all of her equipment, tools and fabric stash passed to me. That started me back on the path, first making pillows and napkins (hard to mess up!), then at the insistence of a high school friend who is a quilter, moving on to more complicated projects. I took a class or two and was hooked. My favorite part of the process is selecting the fabrics – I love working with color and texture, playing around with different options before I make a decision. EQ has been great for me, putting at my fingertips the ability to audition many fabric and color combinations without the time involved in using colored pencils or cutting and pasting fabric swatches. With limited wall space and no children, grandchildren or nieces and nephews to sew for, (and limited patience for undertaking large quilting projects!), moving to wearable art has been a logical progression for me. The projects are small, so I get to play with more fabric combinations and I can wear what I create. Another natural progression (an incredible rewarding for me) has been the move into teaching classes. My previous career was as a speaker and trainer, and I’m finding that the skills I built during 25+ years in front of a room are very transferable to the sewing and quilting world – and it is such fun to share my knowledge with others and learn from them at the same time. I think I learn as much from my students as they do from me. Diane, Marilyn and The Attic Window have provided a wonderful warm and comfortable environment; as a quilter, an employee and an instructor – I’m thrilled to be a part of this community of quilters.
